From Parque Ibirapuera to Praça Buenos Aires, São Paulo’s top parks are transforming group fitness—for people and pets alike.

Dogs are leading a new fitness wave in São Paulo’s green spaces, as parks across the city double down on amenity upgrades catering to both pet owners and exercise enthusiasts. New dog-friendly features have made areas like Parque Ibirapuera and Praça Buenos Aires in Higienópolis hotbeds for social workouts and four-legged mingling.
This shift comes at a time when São Paulo residents are craving community connection and outdoor activity after several years of pandemic-driven isolation. Local pet ownership has boomed—IBGE data shows nearly 47% of São Paulo households had at least one dog in 2025—putting pressure on city planners to design inclusive, flexible urban environments. The result: fitness classes, social running groups, and pet-friendly cafés are popping up at parks once reserved mostly for solitary joggers or families.
Walk into Parque Ibirapuera any morning and you’ll find more than runners lapping the lake. The park’s "Espaço Cão Feliz," a fenced dog agility area near Portão 6, draws crowds of owners doing circuit workouts while their pets tackle obstacle courses. On Saturdays, local group Patinhas Urbanas offers a free "Dog & Run" session starting at 8:00 a.m.—participants jog, squat, and stretch alongside their canine companions. At Praça Buenos Aires, a leafy square flanked by Rua Piauí and Avenida Angélica, the off-leash enclosure has become a gathering point for Tai Chi classes, mobility drills, and Sunday yoga—many instructors now advertise "dog-welcome" policies.
Families in Vila Mariana gravitate towards Parque da Aclimação, which upgraded its pet infrastructure in late 2025. An expanded dog park, water fountains for pets, and dedicated waste bins have made the site a magnet for neighborhood running groups and cross-training meetups. The adjoining Café Aclimação offers discounts for customers who bring their dogs and signs up new members for canine-and-owner Pilates classes, currently priced at R$75 per session.
These evolving park spaces aren’t just about exercise: they are forging connections. "People come for the workout, but stay to swap pet care tips or organize weekend hikes," explained Gabriela Moreira, director of SPDogLovers, an informal network of dog-owner fitness meetups that now boasts over 1,300 WhatsApp members citywide.
The explosion of dog-friendly, fitness-centered parks is backed by data from the Secretaria Municipal do Verde e do Meio Ambiente. In the first half of 2026, daily park attendance at Ibirapuera climbed to 60,000 on weekends, with the municipal office noting a 24% surge in registered pet entries versus two years earlier. Meanwhile, commercial dog training and exercise events citywide have doubled, and signups for dual fitness (owner plus pet) classes are up by more than a third since early 2025, according to FitPaws Brasil.
For many, this trend also makes outdoor movement affordable. Most group fitness sessions remain free or request a voluntary contribution; only select specialty classes—like the R$75 Pilates in Aclimação—carry a fee.
Looking ahead, more municipal parks—including Parque Villa-Lobos in Alto de Pinheiros—are slated to expand dog exercise circuits and integrate social fitness programming by the end of 2026. For locals interested in joining the movement, check neighborhood Facebook groups such as "Dog Hikes Sampa," follow @spdoglovers on Instagram, or stop by participating parks: signage near main gates lists upcoming social workouts and pet-friendly schedules. Experts recommend always checking city guidelines, keeping vaccinations updated, and consulting a veterinarian before starting a new routine.
