São Paulo 3-Day Itinerary: The Perfect Long Weekend in Brazil's Megacity

São Paulo is South America's largest city and its cultural and economic engine — a metropolis of 22 million people that produces more music, art, food, and ideas per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on earth. Begin day one in the Paulista Avenue corridor, the city's main financial and cultural axis. On day three, explore Vila Madalena — the creative neighbourhood of street art, independent bookshops, and coffee bars that best represents contemporary São Paulo's youth culture. The Beco do Batman alley is the city's most famous outdoor mural space, covered floor to ceiling with ever-changing works by Brazilian street artists. The Instituto Moreira Salles on Higienópolis holds Brazil's finest private photography collection in a beautiful modernist building with free admission. End with dinner in Pinheiros, the neighbourhood that has produced more acclaimed restaurants per block than any other in Brazil, where chefs trained in Europe and New York return to cook Brazilian ingredients with global technique — making São Paulo an argument for inclusion among the world's great dining cities that most international travellers have not yet properly considered.
