Consolação São Paulo: Galleries, Clubs & the Neighbourhood That Never Sleeps
Consolação, the long avenue and surrounding neighbourhood that links Paulista with the bohemian zones south of the centre, operates on a schedule unlike any other part of São Paulo. By day, it's a commercial street with office workers, supermarkets, and the city's daily business. By night — particularly on weekends, particularly past midnight — Consolação becomes the nucleus of São Paulo's legendary electronic music and nightclub scene. The cluster of clubs around Rua Consolação and its side streets (D-Edge, Green Valley-affiliated venues, and dozens of smaller rooms) constitute one of the world's great clubbing destinations: a scene that has been compared favourably to Berlin and Ibiza in terms of DJ calibre, sound system quality, and the seriousness with which São Paulo approaches its weekend.
Consolação's daytime identity is equally important. A significant gallery concentration has established itself in the neighbourhood's side streets — Galeria Lume and several others have made Consolação part of São Paulo's art circuit. The independent bookshops along Rua da Consolação are among the city's best. Several serious restaurants have opened in recent years, targeting the creative professionals who live and work in the neighbourhood. The Cemetery of Consolação, one of São Paulo's oldest, is a remarkable example of funerary architecture and sculpture — a genuine outdoor museum open to respectful visitors. Consolação is São Paulo compressed into one long avenue: commerce, culture, and chaos, all operating simultaneously.
